Holiday Travel Gift Guide

One of my favorite projects was writing for a century-old Boston travel agency where I was contracted as a marketing consultant and content provider. In preparation for Christmastime, I created a twelve-post campaign—a gift guide highlighting a different trip for each of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Here are short excerpts from each post. I still want to take all those trips!

Gift Idea #1: Give a Fairy Tale

We can safely say there are few places as magically romantic as Europe during the holidays. Our Munich and Vienna at Christmastime tour gives you an assortment of festive cities, allowing plenty of time to soak in all the sights and sounds of this beautiful season. Stroll the famed Christmas Markets of Munich, Vienna, and Old Town Nuremberg. Then let your fantasy soar to new heights as you visit Neuschwanstein, the beautiful hilltop castle built by Bavaria’s own “Fairytale King”…

Gift Idea #2: Give a Feast

The Kerala region of India is known for its long beaches and lazy backwaters, tropical climate, and healthy lifestyle. But another draw to this southwestern region is its exotic, delicious cuisine. Kerala was established as a hub in the spice trade, attracting traders from all over the world who in turn left their own marks on the area. It is in this lush and historically multicultural setting that we bring you our Kerala and Sri Lanka: Coastal Delights tour…

Gift Idea #3: Give Timelessness

The Republic of Macedonia has a history stretching back thousands of years, with the archaeological sites to prove it. Bearing relics of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, here you will find ancient Christian mosaics, Byzantine frescoes, and Muslim minarets, not to mention fortresses, castles, Roman baths, and remnants of ancient towns. Our Archaeological Tour of Macedonia offers a selection of the region’s most important sites…

Gift Idea #4: Give Out of This World

Know someone who never grew out of their Star Wars phase? Take them to Tatooine! Our Tunisia Discovery Tour will bring you up close and personal with the town of Matmata, inviting you to visit one of the other-worldly troglodyte houses for which this area is known—and for which it was chosen to portray the hometown of Luke Skywalker. Even if you’re not a die-hard fan of 70s space sagas, there is plenty in Tunisia to lure the intrepid traveler…

Gift Idea #5: Give Jewels

Come on, who doesn’t love a little sparkle? A little glimmer? Treat your love to a cruise on the sapphire waters of the Adriatic and visit the islands which grace the Croatian coastline like a jeweled necklace. Our Adriatic Cruise I begins in Dubrovnik, the medieval walled city known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. Stroll the gleaming white stone walkways of the Old Town, stopping under an umbrella to sip a kava as you watch the world go by. From here you will travel to Mljet, an island blanketed with emerald forests and dotted with two topaz-blue lakes…. Continue to Split, the capital of Dalmatia, where you will find the 4th-century Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, shaped like a diamond and set amongst the coral-red rooftops…

Gift Idea #6: Give a Legend

There have been many retellings of the story of Count Dracula, part history and part legend. In 2005, a novel hit the New York Times Best Seller List with a take of its own. Our Historian Tour visits the land of the infamous Dracula—also known as Vlad the Impaler—as told by Elizabeth Kostova in her novel The Historian…. Visit the Fortress of Poienari, the eerie cliffside castle of Vlad Dracula himself. Travel to Sibiu to see Dracula’s birthplace…. Visit Bran Castle, one of the most famous sites in Transylvania…. Return home with a new version of the mysterious Dracula story and your own legends to share.

Gift Idea #7: Give Family Time

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that the last thing your kids need is more stuff. By this time next year, today’s latest-greatest-shiniest-most-blingy gadgets are going to be outdated if not broken. Meanwhile your kids will be another year older, another year more aloof, another year closer to not being around when you want to turn and say something deep and meaningful or just-plain silly. If that thought puts a sigh under your breath, rest assured that they too—though they probably won’t admit it now—are going to miss spending time with you. So why not make the most of the coming year and give them something that will last: You. Spend some time together. Make some memories! Here’s a great way: an Adventure-Packed Week in the Dominican Republic….

Gift Idea #8: Give a Tapestry

What to give the colorful person in your life? Color! Our Balkan Odyssey weaves together eight regions of the Balkans into a beautiful tapestry of people, culture, history, and geography. Visit Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia in a unique 21-day journey that captures the highlights of these countries…. Witness the cohesiveness of the Balkan region as it contrasts with the individual identities of each country…. Think of our Balkan Odyssey as that prized tapestry that hangs on the dining room wall for generations to come, making its way into family dinner conversations and evoking the curiosity of guests. Your stories, memories, and understanding of this unique yet relevant part of the world may last just the same.

Gift Idea #9: Give a Storybook Ending

Throughout the centuries, Morocco’s four capital cities have come to be known as imperial cities, each one as full of mystique and majesty as the legends portray. Our Imperial Morocco Cities tour offers an intimate view into these fabled lands…. Return to the middle ages as you arrive in Fez, with its car-free urban area, medieval sites, and timeless alleyways…journey into the valley of Ziz, passing through limestone gorges lined with date palms and dotted with adobe houses…ride a camel into the heart of the enchanting dunes…return to a Berber tent, your own castle for the night. Make your way to Marrakech, home of the captivating Arabian Nights…find snake charmers, musicians, dancers, fortune tellers, actors, and, yes, storytellers…. As this story comes to a close, may it prompt a thousand more in your heart—just like the tales of Scheherazade.

Gift Idea #10: Give Homemade

The only thing better than a home-cooked meal or a homemade product is one that’s made from fresh-harvested, locally gathered ingredients. If you are a simplivore—one of those souls who loves everything made from scratch—then Istria will be your dream playground. Our Active Gourmet Tour in Istria, Croatia, gives you the family treatment as you are invited into the backyard to explore this wholesome, thriving region….

Gift Idea #11: Give Adventure
